Criminal Justice Reform

African-American men and women are far more likely to be victimized by our broken criminal justice system. To successfully reform the Tennessee criminal justice system, we must work to strengthen the bonds of trust between our local communities and our state and local police, end the era of state mass incarceration, and ensure a successful transition of individuals from prison to home.

Acknowledging that implicit bias still exist across society— Hakeem will fight for

  • an increase in state funding to provide the best training force

  • improve de escalation tactics

  • improve community policing and problem solving

  • alternatives to incarceration, crisis intervention, and officer safety and wellness

Bringing communities together with state & local enforcement together to develop state guidelines on the use of force by police officers, making it clear when deadly force is warranted.
